What PHP version should I use?

I am building a new site which currently runs on PHP 7.4.

Now I am far from an expert on this matter, but I read that, “as of November 28, 2022, PHP 7.4 reached its end of life”. So it’s not being updated anymore - sounds like a potential security risk to me. I see that Bricks only requirement is to use PHP version 5.4 or higher.

Should I update to a newer PHP version than 7.4 and if so, which version will provide the best performance with Bricks? Would I have to check in with every single plugin I use to see if they are compatible also?

Thanks!

Bricks works with the latest PHP - and any reputable plugin will also. There are some speed advantages with 8.1, but it’s security, as you mention, that’s most important. I wouldn’t consider building in 7.4 any more.

The bricks requirements page just says “PHP 5.4 and above”, is there any place where it explicitly states what version of PHP bricks is compatible with? I am comparing it with Elementor which also has something similar on their requirements page (“php 7.4 and above”), however, Elementor has major issues with php 8.1 and Bricks does not. So, I’m looking for an official statement of compatibility to help get my client to move to bricks.

I am currently buildign 3 sites with Bricks all PHP 8.3.3 - no issues at all.

I am also using Advanced Themer, Bricksforge, ACSSS & Frames on all - no issues either.

I don’t use plugins that are not up to date with PHP unless it is really something that can’t be avoided (rare).

It should be compatible with all stable PHP versions (minimum 7.4+). If you face any issues with a stable version please report them to us.
