I have a problem where the animation setting for show popup and hide popup is not working.

May I know did you set this interaction on the popup template itself?
If so, can you try set it on the button which triggers the in this way?

Click trigger 2 (brxe-popup-656 is my Popup A Id, change this to your own popup Id)

Please note that it should be on the button instead of the popup template.
I can set another click trigger on the same button as per your 2nd screenshot. But I have quite a lot of popups and like that… not very subtle. Thanks for the method you gave. 
I have a similar issue on popups triggered by events (load,scroll…): all is working as expected but animations are not working.
I have to set another interation to the section of the popup itself (only for the animation)to have them working.
This issue is not 1.7.2 related.
