SOLVED: No 404 from template or default

My published 404 template is set to type: ‘error page’ and conditions to ‘error’ page.

Regardless if default templates are on or off in settings, a URL to a non existent page goes to the home page.

I can’t get a 404 error page to show.

Any ideas as to what’s wrong?

In conditions, I had to exclude the error page from the Archive Post template. Conditions for that template were set to Front Page, and Archive (categories and tags). Now, including the exclude error page makes it all work.
