This seems like a pretty important/obvious feature but I can’t see anywhere in the UI to set this. Searching the forum hasn’t uncovered any definitive solution either.
Is this possible? If not, are there any alternatives/creative solutions? I can mess with hooks, if necessary, I guess but for something so obvious I am hoping I can avoid that.
Set the alt text in the media library like you would (should) for any other site images
I had tried that (it was actually my working assumption before I noticed this issue since I set ALT tags on all images). However, they were not showing up (I checked by both hover and also by looking at the source).
However, since you have confirmed this is how it should be working I will go back and double check to ensure I am not missing something here.

I just tested it on a site and it worked fine my end, so it SHOULD work
