Sometimes you may want to use the galleries on an archive or another page without showing all the images. Having control over the number of images could help to get the first (or 2/3) as featured image or examples.

Yeah i am thinking the same.
I have few more suggestions:
Limit number of images for metro layout
Add counter to show Visible images/ Total Images (ex. 5/45)
Show button with custom text and dynamic data for link (We could use like “Show all” assign lightbox or custom popup)
We would be able to easily create something like this out of the box
