Like some other users have pointed out above, this issue becomes even more problematic, when you combine several templates such as overlay / transparent headers, archive / post templates, et cetera, because your header will eventually overlay other content or the width of the content will look off because the underlying container of the template is not affecting the actual content.
This can be extremely frustrating because you have to go back and forth between the builder and preview page. If you’re still accepting ideas on how to solve this, I’d like to make the following suggestion.
What if the affecting template would be shown the same way headers & footers are shown right now, so that you can switch to editing them even from your content pages. I understand that there might be some issues if the page conditions are set correctly but there is no element that defines where the content (either Bricks or WordPress) should go. I think that in this case, a simple error message or warning would be the right approach. Perhaps something like this:
“You haven’t added any post content element to your template. Therefore any changes you make here won’t be reflected on the front end.”
Maybe you could take a look at how Elementor is solving this, as I never had a problem with their solution and found it really intuitive from the start.
I understand that it is hard to strike a balance between new features and solving bugs but agree with the other comments that have pointed out how important this is for many of us. Would really love to see a solution for this asap. Thank you!
So you don’t have an ETA or anything on this? Is it even being seriously looked at or worked on? This bug is now over two years old and is a rather significant one. And it is a bug. As I said, I’m new to Bricks and it’s pretty frustrating to deal with. I’m building my first site that has a transparent/overlay header. I have a section template set up that I am inserting using the bricks_after_header hook. The section is not rendered at all in the builder and when I edit the page my header is not viewable and the page content is pushed up underneath the area where it is. This is very, very bad. Here’s what it looks like on the frontend:
Man, that is a tough one to swallow. I am trying to reassure the support peeps at my company they will be able to use Bricks and edit things easily. I now am going to have to explain to them why the page looks completely busted in the builder and tell them to just deal with it. Yikes. And then I have to show this to clients…more yikes.
Throwing my support behind this “feature” as the current visual editor experience is great…right up until we implement templates.
Of course, we chose to try Bricks because of all the features that just make sense and make it easier to build scalable sites. I would love to move my whole studio over to Bricks, but there would 100% be clients and even other staff who hate the lack of clarity in the visual editor.
The current setup is assuming the editor of any Bricks page has knowledge of all templates and their conditions, or will happily back-and-forth between tabs/windows/screens just to check their work, which defies the concept of a visual editor, in my opinion.
As with others, I have a transparent/absolute header and a page title bar setup in a page template, and the lack of templating in the visual editor makes editing page content (particularly starting a new page) more difficult.
I sincerely hope we can expect this sooner than later as I’d love to be able to hand projects over to teammates or contractors without giving a preface about “how to check if your content edits are actually right.”
Bump. Please, please, please be working on this. I can’t believe this is still an issue with Bricks this far into it’s development. When I use a “visual site builder”, I need to see the actual content that will be displayed on the frontend.
Another site I’m building now and this issue continues to be a thing. I either have to tell my support team and clients that the builder is just going to look busted or I have to alter my designs to account for this massive bug. Neither of which is a good thing.
Can one of the devs chime in and let us know if this is actively being worked on or if there is some kind of workaround? This is a huge issue and this thread is almost 2.5 years old now. It says WIP but I can’t imagine it takes 2.5 years to fix it. I really like Bricks and not trying to be too much of a pain in the butt, but this is significant enough that I might have to move on to something else.
I don’t think they view it as a defect which is why it’s taking so long. But yes I agree, it’s maddening. To my knowledge every other builder (or at least the ones I’ve used) includes these when designing pages that include templates so that one can see the bigger picture when editing and not think it looks wrong. It astounds me that Bricks still hasn’t included this.
Here’s hoping that 2.0 will at least include it there at a minimum.
