Can't edit page in Bricks builder - Struggling with Templates Concept

When I create a new page and start adding content, none of it appears in the editor (see screenshot above)

To create my default page template, I imported a page template from the library
(and modified a bit)

I set that template as post type> pages in the conditions settings.

How do I edit a page in Bricks editor?
Any idea what might be wrong?

Background info in case its useful:
I have watched so many tutorials on creating templates, editing pages, etc but I am not sure I truly understand the best practices or even how default templates are applied. Its confusing to me and I may be missing some fundamental.

I can’t even figure out how to confirm which template is being used by this page.

Something odd to me is that when I look at any page in the Wordpress editor, my other template “minimal” does not appear in the dropdown. I’m just assuming the one in use, “Default” is the one I imported [130 in screenshot above] though I’m not sure how to confirm that.

This is the additional page template I created called “Minimal” (for plain, menu-less pages) It doesn’t who up as an option (I have selected it’s condition to be Post Type > Page)

I do see the option to switch to two templates from the SureCart plugin I installed though I don’t see those as editable Bricks Templates (maybe they are hard coded into the SureCart plugin?)

templates dropdown

The only way I have been able to select the “minimal” page template is to set that particular page ID as an individual post to use in the Template conditions. That works.

Seems to me I have done something wrong somewhere, just don’t know where.

First question - why are you using a page template to begin with? In most cases, it’s not really an ideal thing to use globally (but rather for specific pages under specific conditions where the content will be standardized and you can create custom fields to pull the content in). Otherwise, you’re better not using a page template, designing the page as you need it in bricks, and saving any sections that are reused as-is across multiple pages as templates, then using the template widget to add them to the pages as you go (using the template widget means you just have to edit that saved section template to update every instance at once, versus INSERTING a template which will create a copy, and remove the ability to edit globally)

OHHhhh!
Well then that’s probably exactly what I am doing wrong.
I thought I had to create a default template.
In all the tutorials I don’t think that came across.

Thank you.

Edit: Still not sure why I can’t edit a page in the Bricks editor, or why my templates arent in the dropdown but I seem to be getting some clarity now at least. Thanks again

You definitely don’t need a page template. The must-haves are header, footer, and single post for almost every site.

If you don’t see “edit with bricks” from the hover in the page admin listing, then make sure you’ve got Bricks set up to to allow editing pages (this is the default in the settings, so unless you changed it, it should be the case):

What might be happening is that you’ve started editing in Gutenberg for the page, so when you go straight into the editor you’re seeing that instead.

There should be a yellow button in the top left that says “Edit with Bricks”

or alternatively, you can hover the page name in the page listing area and click “Edit with Bricks”:

Thank you!
I was editing it in Bricks.
[Edit: I see how I caused some confusion. By “can’t edit in Bricks” I mean my edits don’t appear on the page. I am in the Bricks editor, but adding things does nothing to the page.]

I made sure I deleted all templates except the header, footer, posts and the one I have used for an individual page. (even tried setting that to draft in case it was interfering)

I also tried enabling “delete all bricks content” to start fresh, and then also made sure I selected “render in bricks” but still no go.

Still couldn’t edit a page in Bricks.

I thought maybe some plugin was interfering so I disabled every plugin
(forgot how annoying that is…each one asks why you are disabling, asks if you want to delete data, and then onboards you again when you re-enable them!)

Sadly, that didn’t help either.

I started a new page from scratch, with all plugins off but I still can’t edit the page in Bricks. Nothing I add shows up on the content even though I can see it in the structure view.

I am not sure what it is supposed to look like, but it still looks like it might be using a template that is expecting Wordpress content, or does that “no Wordpress content found” always show up there?

I can’t see what template would be using though. It’s a page and there are no page Templates left, and it was created after I deleted all my page templates.

Change the condition on the post template to post type = post like this (ie it shouldn’t have entire website):

Which should then look like this in the template area:

And let me know if it works
